Barn Swallows Nest in Our Rafters

Published: 07.16.2020

These five Barn Swallows you see peeking out below have now fledged from their nest located at Russell Crossroads. This means they are GONE from there and hunting nearby, but no longer in need of the nest as a home base.

Each little chunk of that nest was constructed from MUD carried there by the adult male and female barn swallow. They mixed some grasses in too! Inside of the nest, those babies laid in soft feathers for the period of time their parents cared for them. Now that they have left the nest, the parent birds have time to have another set of babies this summer and are still zinging around the Artist Cabin preparing to do just that.

Barn swallows are FAST—they catch a lot of flying insects, so they have to be pretty speedy to do that! Look for their cup-shaped mud nests in rafters like this and click the link below to see more photos of these industrious birds.
