Night Hike Discovers Salamander and More
Published: 08.20.2020
During our Night Hike Tuesday night, we found a Southern Two-lined Salamander exactly where we predicted we would: under a log near a rocky stream. These amphibians are found statewide and eat just about anything they can find under those logs. Small insects, spiders, and even TICKS are food sources for them.
They usually stay out of the water unless they are breeding, but we put this one in for a dip since my dry hands may have stripped it of some essential moisture. Interestingly, the spot we chose to release it had a deer rib bone laying nearby!
We also saw newts in the water at the same location. These types of amphibians thrive in a shallow creek with very few fish present to eat them. Learn more about this salamander species >
