Those Behind the Scenes Make for a Great Show

Published: 07.09.2020

The Fourth of July was great at The AMP this year. Great music from The Bank Walkers, The Vegabonds, and Jessie Lynn, wonderful food from Potz and Panz Gourmet, the breathtaking fireworks show by Joel Hart and the crew from Pyro Shows of Alabama, fire protection and ticket booth operation provided by the Kowaliga Volunteer Fire Department, and the list goes on! There are a lot of behind-the-scenes people that help make our Independence Day show at The AMP go off without a hitch!

Among the crucial yet less visible are the crews of the Lake Martin Resource Association (LMRA) buoy boats! For as long as the Fourth of July fireworks have been shot from The AMP, crews from LMRA have been working in wind, rain, waves, and yes, even sunshine to get the 11 or so “Boats Keep Out” buoys placed and removed in a timely manner.

These buoys weigh about 60 pounds apiece, and the 5-gallon bucket concrete anchor weighs about 80 pounds—that is a lot of drag to pull them out of the lake! These buoys are permitted by ALEA’s Marine Police Division and are required by The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for the safety of boaters during the fireworks show.

Hats off this week to LMRA’s placement crew of Dave McCabe and Gary Hardman headed by boat captain, photographer, and team leader Randy Kirkland and to the retrieval crew of Trey Stinson, Paul Harper, Trip Harper, and boat operator/photographer Bill Duckworth!
